Efforts are underway to resume the construction work of the Thurakkulam Market, a dream project of the Kunnamkulam Municipality. As part of preparing a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project's next steps, an expert team from the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, visited and inspected the site.
The construction of the Thurakkulam Market, which initially began under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model, had come to a standstill midway due to court litigations. However, the project gained new momentum after the municipality received legal advice stating that there are no legal hurdles to continuing the construction under current circumstances.
The market has been envisioned to operate entirely on solar power. In addition to the construction completed so far, the new DPR will incorporate flooring, electrical work, plumbing, centralized air conditioning, spacious parking facilities, drainage, a centralized sewage treatment plant (STP), and a solar power system.
The DPR is being prepared meticulously to assess the required funding to complete the work and to evaluate the municipality's capacity to systematically repay the amount. The municipality aims to complete the project in a time-bound manner and open it to the public as soon as possible.
The Municipal Chairperson stated that an official agreement (MoU) will be signed with the Government Engineering College, Thrissur in the coming days, after which the DPR will be finalized quickly to commence construction.
The site visit was led by Professor C.A. Biju and Assistant Professor Sanu K. Thekkath from the Department of Architecture at Government Engineering College, Thrissur. Municipal Vice Chairperson P.G. Jayaprakash, Standing Committee Chairpersons Pushpa John, Mini Monsy, Misha Sebastian, and Arsha Jiju, along with various councilors, Municipal Secretary K.K. Manoj, and Municipal Engineer Binay Bose, were also part of the visiting delegation.
